Blackstone and the Endgame

December 1916. As Inspector Sam Blackstone makes his way to the docks at the stroke of midnight, his head is bursting with many unanswered questions. He has never met a man called Max, who has offered to sell Scotland Yard the German Navy's secret submarine plans, so why should Max have insisted that he will deal with no one but Blackstone? And why must Blackstone personally go to Harrods and buy the attaché case in which he will carry the money to the docks?

The meeting at the docks goes horribly wrong - as Blackstone has always known it would.

It soon seems that life could not get worse, and Blackstone - cold, hungry, dispirited and on the run - is on the point of ending it all when he has a chance encounter with an old acquaintance from Russia who makes him an offer he has no choice but to accept...
